The original Trader Vic-style Mai Tai: aged rum shaken with orange liqueur, lime juice and orgeat syrup, topped with a float of dark rum. A complex, nutty-sweet tiki classic despite its short ingredient list.

Ingredients

Multiply

1 1/2 oz aged rum
1/2 oz orange liqueur (Curaçao, Cointreau or Grand Marnier)
3/4 oz lime juice
1 oz orgeat syrup
1/2 teaspoon simple syrup (optional)
1/2 oz dark rum, to float (optional)

Instructions

1.
Shake the aged rum, orange liqueur, lime juice, orgeat and simple syrup, if using, with ice until cold.
2.
Strain over ice and top with the dark rum.
